The Alton Towers estate was a former seat of the Earl of Shrewsbury. Following its sale in 1924, a group of local business men formed Alton Towers Ltd, and began to restore the gardens as a tourist attraction. The park has developed progressively since the 1950's, including the operation of a fairground prior to becoming a theme park in 1980. |
During World War II Alton Towers was requisitioned by the War Office as an officer training unit. The gardens remained closed to the public until 1951.
It is a common misconception that military occupation of the towers caused a lot of damage to the building. However, this is not case as much of the building was already boarded up and unused. |
It is now commonly understood that the decay was caused in the inter-war period by the Bagshaw family – the majority shareholders – who sold the wood and plaster fixtures from the house's interiors as well as the lead roofing, allowing water to rot the building's remaining fittings. The house was left a denuded shell.
Hex - The Legend of the Towers is an attraction designed by John Wardley at Alton Towers. It opened in 2000, and is situated in the original armory and picture gallery of the Gothic mansion.
The attraction is tied in with the curse at Alton Towers, the walls around the ride document it. This area is known by staff as one of the most haunted on the estate with regular poltergeist activity. Tools are moved during the night, staff have had objects and stones violently thrown at them by an unseen entity. |
Guests queuing for the ride have seen ghostly children dressed in Victorian clothing, that suddenly vanish.
The ghost of a large man has been seen in and around the music room by members of staff. Loud heavy footsteps have also been heard coming from the room upon investigation the room is always empty. Other footsteps have been heard in the banqueting room but in this instance they are accompanied by a dark shadowy figure. |
A ghost of a Lady in a long black dress has been seen walking the corridors in the tower, her presence is often accompanied by a strong smell of perfume. One member of staff believed her to be a guest who was still in the park after hours and asked her to leave. The woman slowly faded away in front of him, much to the staff member's surprise. |
The Ghost Hunt team first visited this brilliant location in May, 2014, with some fantastic results. Taps and bangs were caught on tape, and we had some amazing K2 activity.
And a clock was heard to chime, and when questioned, the security guards admitted there were no clocks in the house, and nothing that chimed in the park!

Please follow the signs for the last bit of your journey, as your Sat Nav will attempt to take you down a local farm track; especially if you’re coming down the B5417.
